Hey that's not spam! I found that "dog health" site extremely useful, and I would never have found it had it not been for that helpful person posting it in your comment section.

lol. Behold the wonder of the "Whoopie Pie." They are a Lancaster County specialty. They are two cakey things (usually chocolate, shown above in a variety of pumpkin spice, vanilla, chocolate and red velvet). The filling is a somewhat bland but somewhat sweet cream made with lard. It's disgusting and we all grew up on them and Angie made a Whoopie Pile for Kelly's birthday instead of a cake. Oh, Gwen interjects with "It's not bland! It's like frosting only better." Only she didn't know they were made with lard, so maybe now she will reconsider. :)

Hee! Yes, Cindy, those are whoopie pies. Being from the South, you might compare them to moon pies. (But you would be wrong). The South does many amazing things to food, but whoopie pies are one thing that the Pennsylvania Dutch get right (and that's saying something, since the original settlers were German, from "Deutschland," and everyone thought that meant they were Dutch, which was not only wrong, but also only the tip of the Iceberg of Things That Are Backward About L@ncaster County.) But I digress.

I grabbed three after the party and two were gone before I got back to New York. I was so sure I tossed a few more in my suitcase, but no... Sadness. I called my mom the next day and asked her to send me a few more, but my dad had taken the left-overs to work with him.

The thing is, while whoopie pies are local delicacies that can be found in a lot of bakeries and farm markets in our hometown, the really, really good ones are purchased at this one food stand at a farm market held only on Tuesdays. I never remember the name of it, only that it's the booth with red-checkered curtains. My parents made a special trip on Tuesday just to get me a few more, and, generous blogger that I am, I will send you and Dave a sample. It sounds like there's an 80% chance, on average, that you might have a reason to be wearing elastic-waisted pants in the next twelve months anyway, right? And, no pun intended, Ben and Jerry just started making a whoopie pie flavor of ice cream called "Making Whoopie." So... erg... that's enough of that. ;)

addendum: I did a google search for recipes for the Whoopie Pie, and apparently most recipes now call for Crisco instead of lard. I maintain that actual PA Dutch Whoopie Pies are probably made from lard.

Also, I have never ever seen the appeal of the Whoopie Pie. They just don't taste like anything to me. However, the pumpkin ones at Angie's house were mighty tasty. I maintain my lack of interest in your regular chocolate Whoopie Pie, though.

Blasphemy! Whoopie pies are good! Beyond good--heavenly! Hee! I still have a pile in my freezer from Labor Day and I'm trying NOT to eat them.

Thank you again for the bestest birthday/shower/bachelorette party ever! Can't wait to see you all in 2.5 weeks!
